Today is a big day for Samsung. The South Korean company released fantastic numbers in its Q1 report, yet interestingly it didn’t mention an even greater achievement. According to research firm Strategy Analytics Samsung just surpassed Nokia as the biggest phone maker in the world.
This quarter Samsung shipped 93.5 million handsets (44.5 million were smartphones) while Nokia only shipped 82.7 million phones. Nokia has held the spot as the world’s biggest phone maker since 1998. They have been steadily declining in recent years due to stiff competition from Samsung and Apple.
Samsung’s phone shipment numbers are expected to jump even more in the next quarter with the release of the Galaxy S III.
